How to Claim Self-Education Expenses in Your Australian Tax Return

By the Tax Experts at D & B Accountant Pvt Ltd

Continuing your education is one of the best ways to sharpen your skills, advance your career, and boost your earning potential. The great news is that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows you to claim a tax deduction for many self-education expenses.

However, navigating the strict rules around what is and isn’t deductible can be tricky. At D & B Accountant Pvt Ltd, we help professionals maximize their legitimate claims while staying fully compliant. This comprehensive guide outlines everything you need to know before lodging your individual tax return.

What Are Self-Education Expenses?

Self-education expenses are costs you personally pay when undertaking education, training, or professional development that directly relates to your current employment. Eligible formats include:

  • University, TAFE, or RTO courses
  • Professional development seminars and industry conferences
  • Online learning programs and self-paced short courses
  • Professional certifications and workshops specific to your occupation

When Can You Claim Self-Education Expenses?

The golden rule of self-education deductions is a direct connection to your current job. To be eligible, the study must meet at least one of these two criteria:

  1. Maintains or improves the specific skills or knowledge required in your current job duties.
  2. Is likely to result in an increase in income from your current employment.

D & B Professional Insight: The ATO looks closely at your current employment tasks. For example, if an internal audit trainee undertakes advanced taxation or auditing training to stay current with legislation, the link is clear. However, studying to get a completely different job will be knocked back.

When Can’t You Claim?

You cannot claim a deduction if the course:

  • Helps you obtain your first job or is undertaken before you begin earning income in that field.
  • Enables you to change careers or open a brand-new business stream.
  • Is only generally related to your work (e.g., a general motivational or lifestyle course).

What Expenses Can You Claim?

If your study qualifies, you can claim a broad range of direct and running costs:

  1. Course and Tuition Fees

How course fees are treated depends heavily on how your university or provider place is funded   and who pays for it:

  • Full Fee-Paying Places (Upfront Payments): If you pay tuition fees out-of-pocket for a full-fee university degree, TAFE diploma, or RTO certificate, you can claim the full amount in the financial year you pay it.
  • FEE-HELP & VET Student Loans (VSL): If you defer full-fee tuition through a government loan like FEE-HELP or a VET Student Loan, the tuition fees are tax-deductible. You claim the expense in the income year the debt becomes a legal obligation—which is usually on the census date for that subject.
  • Commonwealth Supported Places (HECS-HELP): NOT Deductible. Under Australian tax law, tuition fees for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) cannot be claimed as a tax deduction. This applies whether you pay the discounted fees upfront or defer them via a HECS-HELP loan.
  • Loan Repayments vs. Tuition Fees: It is critical to distinguish between the tuition fee itself and the repayments you make later. The tuition fee (via FEE-HELP) is claimed upfront on the census date. The ongoing compulsory or voluntary loan repayments made through payroll or your tax return are never deductible.
  • Employer Reimbursements: NOT Deductible. To claim a deduction, you must have spent the money yourself. If your employer pays your tuition fees directly or refunds the cost to you, you cannot claim a tax deduction because you have not suffered an out-of-pocket expense. If your employer reimburses only a portion, you can only claim the remaining balance you paid yourself.
  1. Textbooks, Materials & Subscriptions

This includes textbooks, reference journals, printed study guides, stationery, and professional industry subscriptions directly tied to your coursework.

  1. Equipment and Technology (The $300 Rule)

For items like laptops, desktops, printers, and office furniture used for your studies:

  • Costing $300 or less: You can claim an immediate 100% deduction for the work/study-related portion.
  • Costing more than $300: You must decline the value (depreciate) the asset over its useful life, claiming only the percentage that reflects your study use.
  1. Home Office & Internet

If you study online or at home, you can claim the study-related portion of your internet and phone data usage. Make sure to keep a diary log to justify your percentage breakdown.

  1. Travel and Accommodation

You can claim travel expenses (like public transport fares or motor vehicle costs) for journeys between:

  • Your workplace and your place of education.
  • Your home and your place of education (and back).
  • Meals & Lodging: Only claimable if you are required to travel and stay overnight temporarily to attend your course. Normal, daily travel between home and campus with no work connection is not deductible.

What You Absolute CANNOT Claim

The ATO explicitly forbids deductions for:

  • HECS-HELP Course Fees: If you are in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), you cannot claim these fees.
  • Study Loan Repayments: Voluntary or compulsory indexation repayments for HECS-HELP, SFSS, or Student Start-up Loans are completely non-deductible.
  • Private Living Costs: Daily childcare while you study, normal home-to-campus commuting meals, or regular living expenses.

Avoid These Common Pitfalls

When auditing self-education claims, the ATO frequently flags these errors:

  • Claiming 100% of mixed-use bills: Claiming your entire home internet bill when family members use it for streaming.
  • Double-dipping: Claiming costs that your employer paid for directly or reimbursed you for later.
  • Missing Paperwork: Failing to keep digital or physical receipts, tax invoices, course logs, or travel diaries.

Remember, you must retain all supporting documentation for at least five years after lodging your return.
